Broome County NY Carousels

In a Nutshell

A Town of Union run park. What it lacks in space, it makes up for in facilities. Including a pool, a carousel, tennis courts, basketball courts, pavilions, memorials, etc.. Lots of space to walk, but less than a mile of “trail”.

Location and Parking

There are several parking areas near different facilities. There is a section sometimes refered to as "Lower Highland Park" where the tennis courts are located. There are times when the gate between the lower and upper section is closed and one can't drive through between the two. This would be Broas Road.

More details

This Town of Union park has a lot to offer: pool, carousel, basketball courts, softball fields, tennis courts, sand volleyball, concession stand, playground, picnic areas, and large reservable shelters. Highland Park is also home to annual July 4th fireworks. The large hill on which the upper section sits makes a perfect viewing area. The carousel here, one of the six Broome County carousels, was moved here from En-joi Park which had been located near the current Union-Endicott High School. This is the only one of the six carousels that has been relocated. It was originally installed in 1925 and moved to its new home in 1967.

One can ponder at two memorials. The first near the entrance off of Hooper Road is a large marble monument honoring the 57 IBM Endicott Men lost in World War II. It originally had been dedicated in August 16, 1947 at the now gone IBM Country Club. When the Club was sold in 2004, arrangements were made to move the memorial to Highland Park. This is fitting as the land for Highland Park was previously park of the "IBM Farm". The land and money to develop the park were donated to the town in the 1950s.

The other memorial is the 9/11 Memorial located near the tennis courts. This was unveiled September 11, 2015. The memorial includes a twisted steel beam from the World Trade Center and two stone towers centered in a remembrance garden.

There is plenty of space to wander here at Highland, but only a little bit of traditional trail. The longest section starts near the 9/11 Memorial and wanders through the woods near the boundary of the park and comes out midway on the hill down from the Carousel. Despite being "in town", you'll find an interesting assortment of birds.

There is also a Recreation Center located at the Park with gymnasium for indoor sports.
