Louis Fertig was serving with the Ferry Command Division of the Naval Air Corps, stationed at Floyd Bennett Field, New York City, before being transferred to Louisiana. He had enlisted on September 4, 1943. He was killed in a plane crash 12 miles northwest of Monroe, Louisiana on June 13, 1945. The plane he was ferrying was a Grumman TBF Avenger, dive bomber, from Jackson, Mississippi to Shreveport, Louisiana. He was survived by his wife Frances Colwell Fertig of Dallas, Texas. He was a graduate of Binghamton Central High School. He is buried at the Slovak Catholic Cemetery. He would be the last causality from IBM Endicott in World War II.
