Howard Reese Sitgreaves enlisted on June 18, 1942 into the US Coast Guard. He was killed in action on March 9, 1944 aboard the USS Leopold off the coast of Iceland while on convoy patrol. The book "Never to Return" was written based on accounts from the survivors of the Leopold and of crew members of the German U-boat involved.  

He was survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Sitgreaves of Endicott. His name is engraved on a memorial at the Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial in Coton, England.
