Stephen John Gyles enlisted in the Marines in May of 1942. He took part in action on Bougainville where he received slight wounds from which he recovered. He was killed in action on Iwo Jima, March 16, 1945. He would recieve the Silver Star posthumously. Gyles was a graduate of Union-Endicott High School, and was survived by his father John Gyles of Endicott.
Two brothers served with the US Navy in the Sought Pacific. Seaman First Class John J. Gyles, Jr and Seaman First Class James J. Gyles.
He is buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii.

There is a "Hometown Hero Banner" to honor PFC Gyles in the Village of Endicott. It is located on the west side of Nanticoke Avenue, between Main and W.Union Streets. It is closer to the W.
