Hitchcock enlisted in the Marines in February 1943. Sergeant Hitchcock went by his middle name Howard. He was killed while serving aboard an aircraft carrier in the Pacific on March 19, 1945. Sergeant Hitchcock was buried at sea. His name, and others, are on a Memorial in Honolulu. He was survived by his wife and 10-month-old son Howard of Vestal.
