Hugh Vincent Ellis

Technical Sergeant, US Army
Enlisted January 27, 1942
Died March 9, 1945
Age 31

Hugh Vincent Ellis enlisted in January 27, 1942. T/Sgt Ellis was serving with Army infantry in Italy when he was killed in action on March 9, 1945. He took part in the North African and Sicilian campaigns, and in the invasion of Italy. He was a graduate of Vestal Central School. Along with his parents, he is survived by a brother Donald.

While serving in Italy, he has sent some things home to his mother, including some lava rocks from Mount Vesuvius. Excited to hear from her son and to see things from half way around the world, his mother, Laverne Ellis shared the various things at the Vestal Garden Club. The Press and Sun-Bulletin records July 19, 1944.

Originally placed in a temporary cemetery in Italy, his body was returned to the United States on November 8, 1948. He is buried at Vestal Hills Memorial Park.

Notes:
(1) Some records appear to switch first and middle names. In particular the service enlistment records have him as Vincent H. Ellis, listing him as Broome County resident but enlisting at Fort Niagara Youngstown, New York.
(2) A Press and Sun-Bulletin article lists Ellis as a graduate of Union-Endicott High School (July 21, 1944), but a later article (March 22, 1945) indicates Vestal.
