In a Nutshell
One of the best curated natural areas, the SUNY Broome Natural Area is on a community college campus. A variety of trails through field and forest and many informative placards throughout.
Location and Parking
Technically, visitors should obtain a parking pass from the Public Safety building or the Wales Center.
I may not have ever done that. I usually enter the SUNY Broome via Lt. Vanwinkle Drive and head towards the BAGSAI Softball Complex. If you go past the softball fields, there is a small cinder and gravel parking lot on the right marked as parking for softball. The trailhead kiosk can be seen to the northwest of this lot.
More details
The SUNY Broome Natural Area's 125 acres is part of the State Univeristy of New York (SUNY) Broome (County) community college. With several trails that total 3.8 miles there is a lot to see. The Natural Area is used in conjunction with the curriculum at SUNY Broome. The signs throughout the trails are very worth stopping and reading. They not only explain the types of plants and animals in the area, but also give a glimpse to the history of the area. A lot can be told by the shape or size of a tree and the trees around it.
There is also a very fun rope bridge on one of the trails. And a side trail leads to the nearby neighborhood on Sunrise Drive.
