Curtis I. Oliver

Seaman 2nd Class, US Navy
Enlisted August 8, 1942
Died December 25, 1943
Age 35

Curtis Oliver enlisted in the Navy on August 8, 1942. At the time, he had 17 years with IBM as a machinist. He was assigned to the Destroyer USS Leary (DD-158) which was sunk in the North Atlantic on December 24, 1943 by German submarine U-275. The Leary had been with the USS Card (CVE-11 escort carrier) and other ships on a hunter-killer mission in the Atlantic. He was survived by his two children Robert and Joyce Oliver of Johnson City.

Notes:
(1) A birth certificate lists the DOB as 19 March 1908, but military records show 1907.
(2) DOD from Endicott paper and a Cenotaph in Chenango Valley Cemetery show 25 Dec 1944. However, the Destroyer Leary was attacked on 24 Dec 1943. For respect for family, I am showing the date as December 26.
(3) Based on the birth certificate and when the ship sank, I've listed age as 35 and the DOD as the earlier one.
